Astronomy 323: The Local Universe
Instructor:
Class will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 9:30-10:20am
Text (required): Galaxies in the Universe, by Sparke and Gallagher.
We will also use the following books which are on
reserve in the astronomy library for reference:

Galactic Astronomy by Binney and Merrifield
Modern Cosmological Observations and Problems by Bothun
Physical Processes in the ISM, Spitzer
Astrophysics of the Diffuse Universe, Dopita and Sutherland
Nucleosynthesis and Chemical Evolution of Galaxies, Pagel
There will be homework sets given out every few weeks, short tests approximately every 2 - 3 weeks, and two one-hour "midterms", one in the week before spring break and one in finals week.
Grades: Homework: 50% Tests: 15% (5% per test) Two midterms: 35%
Classes will be interactive, with group discussions of the material.
