Binary Black Holes, Gravitational Bursts and the Issue of the Final Spin

Pablo Laguna (Penn State)

The spin of the final black hole in the coalescence of black holes is determined by the "residual" orbital angular momentum of the binary. his residual momentum consists of the orbital angular momentum that the binary is not able to shed before merging. In this talk, I will briefly review the current status of binary black hole simulations and present results from a study of the spin of the final black hole and gravitational bursts in a series of black hole encounters, ranging from almost direct infall to numerous orbits before plunge, that exhibit multiple bursts of radiation in the merger process.
