The Problem of Simulating the Formation of Thick Disks in a Cosmological Context

Alvaro Villalobos Cofre (Groningen)

One of the ultimate goals in astronomy is to understand the formation of galaxies and in particular the formation of their components: halo, thick disk, thin disk, bulge. In this talk I will describe the project aimed to understand the formation of one of these components: the thick disk. This study is carried out using numerical simulations, assuming that a thick disk is formed by a merger between a pre-existing thin disk and a smaller satellite galaxy. Since mid 80's a number of works have focused on this problem but none of them have made their realizations within a fully consistent cosmological context for masses, scales, orbital parameters, etc., which is the main intention in this study.
